. >>> and in the u.s., the president is taking his fiscal cliff solutions directly to the people. >>> plus, a modern-day spy story ripped from the pages of a tom clancy novel. good morning, everyone. i'm lynn berry and we start with breaking news out of japan. a strong 7.3-magnitude earthquake has struck off the country's northeastern coast. that's the same region hit by last year's massive earthquake and tsunami. well, this morning's quake shook buildings as far as tokyo, and there are reports of a three-foot tsunami in the miyagi prefecture. the u.s. geological survey says there's no risk of a widespread tsunami, and so far, there have been no news of injuries or damage. of course, we're going to keep an eye on any aftershocks that occur and we'll bring you the very latest. >>> well, elsewhere, all eyes are on cairo this morning as turmoil has once again overtaken egypt's capital. this time, it's in response to a politically explosive power grab by the democracy's president, mohamed morsi. right now, soldiers are setting up barricades as morsi's opponents plan a million man mar

miklaszewski, nbc news, pentagon. >>> back here at home, fiscal cliff negotiations in washington are still up in the air. most lawmakers have gone home for a long weekend break. this as timothy geithner says the obama administration is willing to go over the fiscal cliff. nbc's tracie potts joins us live from washington with an update. good morning to you. >> reporter: let's start with geithner. he told cnbc that instead of continuing tax breaks for the wealthy, the obama administration is willing to go over this cliff which means they're willing to let your taxes go up and unemployment checks go away massive spending cuts happen if the pentagon instead of continuing the tax breaks for the wealthy. now there's been very little progress here on chiapitol hill which is why so many have gone home. we know that president obama and john boehner spoke by phone. republican sources telling us they had a conversation yesterday. we don't have a readout on what that was about. we don't know that if any meetings have been scheduled. but any small sign of progress is welcome here on capitol hill.

until that so-called fiscal cliff, and still no deal. but this morning, there are signs of some movement in negotiations. president obama and house speaker john boehner did speak by phone last night. that conversation came after the president offered to reduce his initial request for $1.6 trillion in new revenue to $1.4 trillion but is reportedly not backing down on raising taxes for the top 2%. boehner's spokesman said republicans are still seeking further concessions on spending cuts. >>> well, there are some new details this morning on that london nurse who took her own life after passing through a prank call at the hospital that was treating kate middleton for extreme morning sickness. jacintha saldanha's family reveals that she left a suicide note, though they haven't released details of what that note said. earlier this week, the two deejays who made the call said the tragedy has left them shattered, gutted and heartbroken. >>> now, here's your first look at this morning's "dish of scrambled politics." mitt romney wasn't the only one caught off guard last night. it is repo

one place. good morning to you. with just 19 days left until america goes off that fiscal cliff, tensions are rising. house speaker john boehner is warning his fellow republicans not to make any christmas plans and tea party conservatives are in no mood to negotiate on tax hikes. >> i tell them come to me after you've gotten rid of all the spending. come to me when you get rid of the $3 million you spent last year to watch monkeys on methamphetamine. come to me after you pay for the money you spent on watching a robotic squirrel. >> tracie potts is live with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. no movement to report in the fiscal cliff. we can tell that you across the country mayors and governors are becoming increasingly concerned about the impact back home. there's growing angst on capitol hill over the fiscal cliff. >> figure it out. >> it's really time to get serious. >> reporter: mayors are getting nervous. >> congress needs to act immediately. >> reporter: and the public is worried. in our new nbc/"wall street journal" poll, 70% of democrats and 59% of republicans urge compromise.
